Maths

At Aldwickbury, we view mathematics as a vital part of a pupil’s development, not only academically, but as a foundation for logical thinking, resilience and problem-solving. Our maths curriculum is designed to stretch, support and inspire, offering pupils a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and preparing them confidently for their senior school of choice.

From Reception through to Year 4, pupils follow the National Curriculum plus one year, ensuring they are consistently challenged and well ahead of national expectations. In Years 5 to 8, our programme is driven by the Common Entrance syllabus, enabling strong preparation for entrance exams and scholarship opportunities. For some pupils, an adapted GCSE paper is also offered in Year 8 to stretch and extend their knowledge further.

From the midpoint of Year 5, pupils are taught in ability sets to support progression at an appropriate pace. Our specialist maths teachers (from Year 5 onwards) and experienced class teachers (in younger years) ensure high-quality, focused teaching across all age groups.

Beyond the classroom, enrichment is a key part of our offering. Pupils take part in the UKMT Maths Challenge and enjoy collaborative events with other schools, which help to broaden their mathematical thinking and develop a passion for the subject.
