World Book Day at Aldwickbury – more than just dressing up!

Here's a chance to re read our blog from our last dressing up world book day - yes we only dress up every other year!!

At Aldwickbury, we aim to foster a love of books and reading in all our boys. The library at Aldwickbury is a colourful and welcoming part of the school, stocked with reading matter of all kinds. So, boys and teachers alike are very much looking forward to celebrating World Book Day on 1st March.

What is World Book Day?

For the 21st year running, schools and libraries in over 100 countries will celebrate the joy of reading on World Book Day. Every child in the UK will be entitled to a book token that can be redeemed for a choice of World Book Day books, encouraging young people to discover new stories and explore the world of reading. Many schools, including Aldwickbury, will encourage pupils to dress up as their favourite character from a book and tell others all about it – something our boys are very excited about!

Activities at Aldwickbury

Here at Aldwickbury, the World Book Day celebrations will be centred around the library, where a host of reading-related activities will be on offer. To add a little healthy competition to the mix, we will hold a reading challenge, encouraging boys to pick and read six different books and discuss what they enjoyed about each one. In lessons, boys will be asked to choose their favourite book, author or illustrator and introduce them to their fellow pupils. There will also be a World Book Day Assembly.

What our pupils say

There’s always a fantastic atmosphere in the build-up to World Book Day at Aldwickbury, and on the day itself. From choosing a character to assembling their costumes, the boys are always eager to get involved.

“I’m very excited about World Book Day because I get to dress up and not just bring a book in. I’m going to be able to wear a pair of glasses, as I’m dressing up as Harry Potter and I will be able to talk about my favourite book.”

Luke J, 3C

“I’m excited because I get to see other books that I might not have heard of and I’ll be able to listen to other people’s recommendations. I like it this year as I can dress up and the school atmosphere is fun.”

Rory H, 7F

Book-based fun throughout the year

Although dressing up and having fun on World Book Day is a focal point of the year, it’s by no means the only chance for boys at Aldwickbury to get involved and talk about books. Our Year 8s pair up with the younger boys for Reading Lab sessions four times a week, giving all pupils an opportunity to discuss books together. Many pupils choose to help run the library on a regular basis, choosing new stock, creating displays and organising reading events. Boys at Aldwickbury are also lucky enough to benefit from regular author visits and reading-related workshops throughout the year.
