Single Gender Schools vs Mixed Gender Schools

What are the Benefits of a Single Gender School vs Mixed Gender School?

When considering a school for your child, deciding between single gender vs mixed gender schools can be one of the more difficult decisions. There are benefits to both single gender and mixed gender schools in supporting children’s academic and personal growth. However, in recent years there has been a noticeable preference for co-education.

From September 2025, Aldwickbury School will transition to a co-educational setting and offer girls the same exception level of education and opportunities that Aldwickbury boys have enjoyed for generations. Starting from this date, girls will be welcomed into the Pre-Prep (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) and will progress through the school year by year.

So, what are the benefits of single gender vs mixed gender schools? Read on to find out more.

Benefits of mixed gender schools

Some parents prefer their children to be educated in a mixed environment, one that includes both boys and girls. Co-education has many benefits, including:

  • It reflects the wider world and can help some children to feel comfortable socially in other environments, including the world of work and their future profession.
  • A mixed-gender environment can help children to see things from others’ points of view and better accept difference.
  • For families with boys and girls, having one school for their children can simplify logistics and allow siblings to share the same experiences.
  • Being in a co-educational environment, can help promote equality and mutual respect from an early age.

Benefits of single gender schools

There are also a number of benefits to single gender schools, which have been successful for a long time. Some of these include:

  • Boys and girls can have different learning styles, and one of the advantages of single gender schools is that teaching a single gender group allows teachers to better tailor their approach to boys’ and girls’ individual educational needs.
  • Young people develop physically and emotionally at different rates and single-gender schools may be better equipped to deal with this.
  • At a time in life when young people are beginning to discover the opposite sex, single sex schools provide a distraction-free environment for pupils where they can concentrate fully on their studies.
