Teachers, parents and friends from across the Aldwickbury community have raised more than £37,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity after completing a 27-mile ultramarathon walk in support of Max.

The fundraising challenge, named Miles for Max, was organised after Max was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in December 2025. Since then, he has been receiving treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital. A talented runner, Max was part of our team that won the National Prep Schools Cross Country title last year, making the endurance event especially meaningful for everyone involved.

Originally planned as a solo challenge by Aldwickbury teacher, Mr Marshall, the event quickly grew into a major community effort, with dozens of teachers, parents and friends joining together in support of Max and his family.

The walkers set off before 5am on Saturday 23rd May from Max’s future senior school, Haileybury, embarking on the demanding 27-mile challenge in exceptionally hot conditions. Battling soaring temperatures throughout the day, the group walked via Tottenham Hotspur Stadium — home to Max’s favourite football club — before completing the ultramarathon 11 hours later at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

A total of 38 walkers took part, supported by a three-person support crew of Mr Symes, Mr Schanschieff and Mrs Saponaro along the route. Among those participating were Max’s father and older brother, making the day particularly emotional for all involved.

Max joined the final section of the ultramarathon and led the group to the finish line at Great Ormond Street Hospital, a powerful and emotional moment for all involved.

An amazing and emotional day

“What an amazing and emotional day with incredible support from Aldwickbury School, friends, family and GOSH. Max was grinning ear to ear as he crossed the finishing line with the whole group. Thanks to all involved, especially Tim Marshall, whose original idea blossomed into a very special event.”
