English
Here at Aldwickbury, we are proud of our highly skilled and passionate English team who engage our boys in a fun and inspiring English curriculum from their first days in Reception until their final days of Year 8.
With a strong focus on learning to read and reading for pleasure, we understand that English underpins success in communication and therefore is the backbone of all their studies.
English is a stimulating and enjoyable subject. Whilst in Reception, the younger boys may be found playing in the Gruffalo’s cave, our older boys might be found touching, smelling, listening to and closely observing items to enable them to write more vivid descriptions.
During their time at the school, our boys engage with a wide variety of texts appropriate to their age and ability, using these texts as a springboard from which to write in a variety of styles and genres. Boys are actively encouraged to share their work, give feedback and perform their work at a variety of events.
There is so much more to English than what is seen in the classroom: the department works closely with the library to offer a wide range of events designed to inspire and motivate. This plays a big part in our boys’ love of subject. Events include, but are not limited to Book Clubs, author visits, writing workshops, Summer Holiday Book Bingo, the annual Poetry Slam and The Almighty Aldwickbury Battle of the Books.
By the time he leaves, an Aldwickbury boy will be well equipped and confident to face the rigours of senior education and beyond.
