Year 4 Maths Victory

Belmont (Mill Hill) SchoolYear
5 Mathematics Challenge
Thursday 9th June 2011
Due to the time constraints of the Year 5 play rehearsals, four Year 4 boys, Michael R, Oscar H, George G and Zachary C, were invited to take part in this competition, organized and run by Douglas Buchanan (www.dcbeagle.com).
Twenty-one schools took part in the fast and furious maths problem solving afternoon. In teams of two, the pupils moved around the hall trying to solve the eight challenges each of which lasted for eight minutes, timed by a giant three by two meter digital clock. The problems ranged from Tough Tangrams to Catch the Train. Some of Belmont’s Year 8s were the markers giving one mark for one correct solution, four marks for two, nine for three, sixteen for four, etc.
Michael and Oscar were declared the winners. They each received an all singing, all dancing scientific calculator and a geometry set. Their problem solving skills were impressive and they worked very well as a team, plugging each other’s gaps.
Many, many congratulations are due to Michael and Oscar, especially as they were an academic year below all the other competitors. All four boys were enthusiastic, charming and keen to represent their school. They were a credit to their parents and teachers.
