The Green Club
On Wednesday afternoons there is a new activity which is proving to be very popular. Thirteen boys from Years 5 - 7 have joined with Mrs P and Mrs W to form the Green Club.
We are incredibly lucky to work in such a beautiful and ecologically exciting environment and want to conserve and enhance this. We hope to create wildlife areas that can be used by all the boys in nature clubs, science lessons and environmental lessons. Last week we ‘walked’ the grounds and discovered a number of different habitats, fungi, insects and trees and saw a number of different birds. We made plans for how we could enrich our environment.
On Wednesday we began to build a bug ‘hotel’ in the woods surrounding the field. This comprises of layers of sticks and leaves under a wooden pallet. On top of this are laid some boards and these are covered with gravel and pieces of broken flower pot. Another pallet has been laid on top. Next week we will complete it by adding wood bark, fir cones and rotting logs. (All of these things we have found around school and recycled). We hope in a few weeks to find it inhabited by a number of mini beasts.
The plan is to build a number of these around the school, put up bird boxes, bird feeding stations, bat boxes and make bee ‘hotels’. We plan a wildlife pond and garden, wild flower and long grass area, (‘meadow is too grand for the areas we intend to use!) and ultimately to map the species around school and create a nature trail as well as looking at the school’s Green credentials.
