Harvest at the Pre-Prep
There was a definite buzz in the hall on Thursday morning as the Pre-prep celebrated their Harvest Assembly on a Bee theme!
The boys sang beautifully about the changing seasons and the work of a Bee farmer, and we heard a poem about how bees are so important in producing the fruit and vegetables to feed us all.
The Reception classes used their newly acquired counting skills to count the bees into the hives and we were all amazed how confident they were even though they have only been with is for four weeks!
Mrs Baynes dressed up in her protective clothing talked to the boys about the life of a bee hive. It was amazing to learn that each hive can have up to 60,000 bees, and in a lifetime of hard work a worker bee will only be able to gather enough nectar for one teaspoon of honey!
A Bee Hive illustrates many of the Aldwickbury values. Bees need to Co operate within their community to survive. Some need to polish the cells and keep the hive free from viruses. Others must guard the entrance of the hive to stop invading wasps robbing the honey. Forager bees must go searching for good supplies of nectar and dance their ‘waggle dance’ to show their mates where to go.
A productive hive must always be Fair, as soon as bees overcrowd and the dynamics change, then the queen will leave her hive and swarm. The worst scenario for a bee keeper! Of course all must Respect the Queen Bee who uses her Integrity to lead and control her court!
Harvest at the Pre-Prep
Monday 10th October 2011
This has been a busy week in the Pre-Prep. Our Harvest Festival on Thursday was a wonderful occasion and we are very grateful for all your donations for the Sudan Famine. This is a difficult concept for young children to understand, in a land where we have so much. However, I hope that the boys have a better appreciation for their meals, which are so varied and plentiful, and also have an understanding that for many a few grains of rice is their daily ration.![]()
