Extraordinary School for Boys: helping boys to love literacy.
Watching Gareth Malone’s documentary on BBC 2 last night work with a group of boys from a state primary school was fascinating for someone who has worked for twenty five years in extraordinary schools for boys. It confirmed a long held opinion that for boys up to the age of 13 being free from the stiff competition girls provide enables boys to develop at their own pace with confidence. Our own Head of English spent last year working with the International Boys’ School Coalition researching ‘How We Help Boys to Become More Prolific, Powerful and Confident Writers?’ You can read his research paper by going to the English page on our website. Steve Lott also attended the ISBC conference ‘Inventions in Teaching’ this July in Philadelphia USA. We have recently created a superb new library which is bright, comfortable, well stocked and looked after by a specialist librarian. It is by no means easy to encourage boys to read and love the English language but we have specialist teachers of boys who can be solely focussed on their needs, looking to help them take advantage of opportunities in academic, cultural and sporting pursuits. You don’t just have to watch BBC 2 to see an extraordinary school for boys you are very welcome to visit Aldwickbury School to do that. Contact the Registrar on 01582 713022 to make an appointment to meet with the boys of Aldwickbury School.
Visit the International Boys’ School Coalition website (www.theibsc.org) for more information on how boys’ only schools are a modern movement in education worldwide. There is nothing archaic about wanting the best environment and learning experiences for your son.
