The National Gallery Course
On Friday 21 January Mrs Preston, Mrs Du Plessis, Mrs Lockwood and myself attended a one day course at The National Gallery in London.
Each year The National Gallery choose one picture from their collection for schools across the country to use as inspiration for cross-curricular work in their schools. The chosen painting this year is a 236.2 x 474.9cm sized oil painting on canvas by the artist Paolo Veronese called ‘The Family of Darius before Alexander (1565-7). This project is recognised by educationalists as a means to inspire children and for them to make meaningful links between subjects. Subjects such as Art, English, History and Geography lend themselves more naturally to taking part in this project. In the coming months staff will be looking at how this project can enhance their particular subject and where meaningful links can be made to enhance the curriculum still further. Please have a look at The National Gallery website under ‘Take One Picture’ if you wish to find out more.
This will provide an opportunity for the whole school to be involved as a community on one project from Reception class right through to Year 8 at their own levels. In a few weeks Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be visiting the gallery to look at this painting in particular along with a few other pictures on a variety of themes. In the summer term the project will culminate with a show of the boys’ work related to this project. Alex Devlin Head of Art
