In Peterborough on Saturday 5 March, four fencers from Aldwickbury were taking part in the regional qualifiers for the British Youth Championships. The event had fencers from across the Eastern Region competing in Sabre and Epee events for U12-U18. A 58% increase in entries from the previous year was recorded, making it the largest Eastern Region qualifier yet. Aldwickbury fencers were superb on and off the piste, helping each other and offering support to their team mates. The quality of fencing was high and Aldwickbury achieved some notable successes:
Silver - U14 Boys Sabre - Thomas R
5th - U12 Boys Sabre - Daniel J F
9th - U12 Boys Sabre - Jonathan Martin
13th - U14 Boys Sabre - Lucas J F
The stand out performance of the day was Thomas R who has qualified for the British Youth Championships on the 1 May at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. It was somewhat ironic that he was beaten to the Gold by an Aldwickbury old boy, Oscar H.
Thomas R is travelling to Poland in the next few weeks to compete in his first International fencing competition. We wish him well.
