Last week saw the final round of the Aldwickbury Chess League. Adam G was undefeated for the third year running and the runner up was Fraser Wi who beat third ranked player Alec Nicholls in a decisive game. All three qualified for the Herts ‘Megafinal’ by scoring more than fifteen points. Max F, Herbie T, George D and William A also qualified, either by scoring fifteen points or topping their age group. The Chess Team were also involved in a tied match (20 all) against Lochinver House. It is great when every individual game and indeed every move matters.
A very competitive afternoon of quizzing was had by the boys at Dr Challoner’s Grammar School. The B team (Will C, Sam Sc, Herbie T and Alex L) beat Oasis Academy, but lost to a very strong Dr Challoner’s A team.
The A team (George C, Alex H, Shome S and Ollie L) topped their group and beat Challoner’s A 530-500, in a very high scoring game which ebbed and flowed all the way. After this exhausting match they lost to HABS, buzzer speed being perhaps split seconds slower. HABS then lost to Challoner’s but won the three way final on points difference. Dr Mark Fenton, Headmaster of Dr Challoner’s for fifteen years, believed this year’s competition to be the highest standard he had seen. It was certainly one of the most nail-biting.
